Carey Gilliland FNAEA CPEA
I was born at St Martins Hospital and raised in Bath, living in Combe Down and Freshford before attending university in Reading (studying modern history and philosophy in between playing rugby). I returned to Bath after university, barring a short stint working in London and joined Andrews Estate Agents in 1996. I spent 14 years with Andrews, managing their Newbridge Road, George Street and Camden Road offices in Bath and winning numerous awards for the company along the way. I joined the National Association of Estate Agents in 1998 and was one of the first estate agents in the country to successfully complete their CPEA property qualification. I was made a Fellow of the National Association in 2001. Having thoroughly enjoyed working in property in Bath, it has always been a dream of mine to work for myself and specialise in character property in my home town.
Outside of estate agency, I live with my family in High Littleton, having moved from various homes in Bathwick, Lansdown and Peasedown. My wife Clare is a midwife at the RUH and I have two daughters aged 7 and 2. When not working, I can usually be found in my garden, pursuing my goal of self sufficiency in veg for the family. I also grow specialist chilli pepper varieties and might occasionally escape to the South Coast for a spot of sea fishing (although my daughters think I’m incapable of actually catching anything).
Since walking into the property world at the tender age of 17 I have experienced what a huge part of everyone’s lives property has become these days. Therefore dealing with people ‘the right way’ is the reason we decided to launch Madison Oakley.
Before Madison Oakley I worked for Pullin Knight Estate Agents for 4½ years, running their Moorland Road office in Bath. During this period I had the pleasure of building up a large client base and forming some excellent business relationships. Areas which have became second nature are; advising clients on investments, capital returns, yields as well as sourcing family homes for private purchase and negotiating on clients behalf. Prior to Pullin Knight I worked in Salisbury and Dorset for Palmer Snell gaining valuable experience in the corporate environment as well as the country market.
On the rare occasion I find myself away from work you’ll be sure to find me in one of a number of places. I often head back to my home village of Ebbesbourne Wake, near Salisbury, to catch up with family & friends. We often frequent a very lovely traditional old English country pub called the ‘Horseshoe’ (I highly recommend a visit, you’ll certainly hear of all the local gossip and how Mrs Foyle’s prize winning tomatoes are coming on for this year’s fete!). Alternatively I will be in the garage, restoring my iconic Nissan sports car. Contrary to what you hear, there is not a maximum amount of times you can polish a car!
Music is also a huge passion of mine and every September with friends, I organise a music festival in Salisbury for charity. It’s set up in memory of a good friend, raising money to help talented young children pursue their sporting dreams and is a fantastic weekend away in the middle of a Wiltshire valley. Nothing quite like it.
Other places to look for me include the gym and my garden, especially when the sun’s out.
I look forward to meeting and working with old and new clients as we move the exciting venture of Madison Oakley forward.
